What is Mental Health and How Can We Promote It?

Mental health is an important part of our overall wellbeing, affecting the way we think, feel, and act. It encompasses our emotional, psychological, and social well-being, and influences our cognition, perception, and behavior. Mental health is essential at all stages of life, from childhood to adulthood. From the perspective of positive psychology or holism, mental health can include a person's ability to enjoy life and create a balance between life activities and efforts to achieve psychological resilience.

Cultural differences, subjective assessments, and competing professional theories all shape the way mental health is defined. Early signs of mental health problems may include sleep disturbances, lack of energy, lack of appetite, and thoughts of harming oneself or others. The occupational therapy profession offers a wide range of services for all stages of life in a variety of practice settings. Each of these therapies has been shown to improve mental health and has resulted in healthier and happier people.

With this more structured environment, the United States will continue to have greater access to mental health care and an increase in overall treatment for the mentally ill. Even those who are mentally healthy can benefit from health promotion and additional prevention strategies to reduce the impact of difficult situations.Research shows that high levels of mental health are associated with greater learning, creativity, productivity, prosocial behavior, positive social relationships, improved physical health, and longer life expectancy. William Sweetser was the first to coin the term mental hygiene, which can be considered the forerunner of contemporary approaches to working on the promotion of positive mental health. It also emphasizes that preserving and restoring mental health is crucial at the individual, community, and social levels.Unemployment has been shown to harm a person's emotional wellbeing, self-esteem, and overall mental health.

Navigating mental health care helps guide patients and their families through fragmented mental health industries. It is important to note that good mental health depends on a delicate balance of factors and that several elements can contribute to the development of these disorders.The National Institute of Mental Health suggests that a genetic family history may increase the likelihood of suffering from mental health problems since specific genes and genetic variants increase a person's risk. Having social connections, good personal relationships, and being part of a community are vital to maintaining good mental health and contributing to people's recovery should they become ill.However, there is still a lack of studies on mental health conditions (MHC) to raise awareness, develop knowledge and attitude when seeking medical treatment for MHC in Bangladesh. The World Health Organization recommends that the allocation of health expenditure be commensurate with the health burden and that there be parity between the physical and mental aspects of healthcare.
